Tonight DS #1 has requested potatoes and corn, so we will be having that with some chicken breast strips. DH sautes them in a pan with a little butter and some seasoning. We are getting to the bottom of our freezer so I predict we will also be having a number of pantry meals this week and next - mostly soups. The boys love soup, but my 2 yr old makes quite a mess! Ah, the joys of motherhood :-)

| Potatoes and corn. Sounds like my kind of vegetables! I've been trying to be better about eating a bunch of non-starchy vegetables. I know it's better for me, and soup is a perfect way to eat them! |

soups are great! this cold weather puts me onto thick soup aka stew.
what tosses my cookies is the price of "stew meat" - typically the bits and pieces left over from trimming and packaging other cuts. not priced quite like that!
our market breaks down a fair amount of their own primal cuts - and pretty much anytime there's "reduced for quick sale" cuts - its all dated - typically three days out and it's halfl price or less.
yesterday I picked up a veddy nice chunk of shoulder steak for 1.59/lb vs. the 3.99/lb for a package of stewing chunks. since it is not bound to even see the fridge, getting a browning + wet slow cook, I'll cut it into little pieces meself, thank you. a good knife can do wonders on budget trimming . . .
I do only buy stuff I'm going to fix that same day ... just to keep my paranoia in check....
also did a new to me biscuit - flour, salt, baking powder and heavy cream - no "cut in the butter" routine - marvelous biscuits! these rolled out for cutting - typically I do the cut in the shortening drop biscuits.
if you've never tried the "heavy cream" biscuits, highly recommended! |
