Sometimes, we agree to disagree!
The Reluctant Gourmet is at it again! This time, he’s serving a whole fish, head and all, for dinner. The scene unfolds as my two daughters stare wide-eyed at the meal. Their faces say it all—shock, confusion, and just a hint of horror. What could be more entertaining than their reaction to this unexpected dinner guest?
It started with a simple plan. We wanted something fresh and impressive. A whole fish seemed perfect. Crisp skin, flaky meat, and vibrant garnishes promised a meal to remember. However, I didn’t anticipate the reaction. As the fish arrived at the table, its glazed eyes gleaming, the room fell silent. My daughters froze. Then came the questions.
“Why does it still have its head?”
“Is it looking at me?”
"Dad, how can you eat that?"
"Dad, the eyeballs are still in the fish."
"Are you going to eat the eyeballs, Dad?"
The Reluctant Gourmet, undeterred, calmly explained the beauty of whole fish, mentioning flavor, tradition, and sustainability. But his audience wasn’t buying it. Their plates remained untouched, and their expressions were a mix of curiosity and dread.
The cartoon captures this moment perfectly. It’s a lighthearted take on an otherwise memorable dinner. By the end, laughter saved the day. But spoiler alert: they still didn’t eat the fish!
My wife reminded me that my youngest, now 16, ordered a whole fish on their trip to Peru last year. I asked how she did with it, and my wife said she was fine once she figured out how to eat it.
